Filaine Champagne is back in stock!

What up Bubbly Lovers? Codey here...

Guess what? Filaine Champagne is back.

As you might remember: I offered this Champagne in April and it sold out in a heartbeat. Well, the re-stock has finally arrived and the bubbles are as glorious as ever. Around Ancona's we've begun to call it "The Halley's Comet Champagne".

In April Mitch and I took a field trip to visit the cellars of ten of the finest micro-producers in Champagne (work doesn't suck). All of the wines were stellar, but one wine really spoke to us:

Filaine (Fabrice Gass) NV Brut 1er Cru Damery Cuvèe Speciale Champagne

Fabrice Gass is a winemaking genius and impeccable farmer. This guy grows all his own grapes, the way it should be done. He is also a fanatical, chain-smoking eccentric who only makes a few hundred cases a year. Which is probably just enough to support his own conspicuous Champagne consumption.

Fabrice actually bottles a modest portion of his wine in magnums. Although, right now, mostly just for personal imbibition. According to Fabrice, "a magnum is the perfect amount of Champagne for two people: so long as one isn't drinking!"

That said, the wine is terrific. There is certainly $100+ worth of juice in this bottle. Although it's hard to compare an ant to an elephant--this wine is no doubt on the level of something like Dom Perignon or Roederer Cristal. And spoiler alert: it's much less money.

Quite limited: if you would like some, please email asap with how many bottles you would like, and which store you would prefer to pick it up in.

'Come quickly, I'm tasting stars.'

Codey Foster, Wine Director

Standard Retail: $54.99/bottle
Email Special: $46.00/bottle
6 bottles or more price: $40.50/bottle
Limit 12 bottles per person

Tanzer Notes: Bright yellow-gold.  High-pitched citrus pith, quince and yellow rose scents are complemented by notes of toasty lees and chalky minerals.  Shows very good depth and energy on the palate, offering bitter pear skin and blood orange flavors and a hint of tarragon.  The floral quality comes back strong on the clinging finish, which shows excellent clarity and mineral bite. (45% pinot noir, 35% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier)

Foster Notes: So damn good. The Cuvee Speciale is the perfect continuum of decadence, power, minerality, and breathtaking vinosity. This is soulful and seamless juice that is undoubtedly the outcome of nearly perfect and conscientious farming. Flavors of concentrated lime, meyer lemon, mint, and freshly baked French baguette are laced with outspoken earth tones. This is flinty/chalky/smokey juice--but in the most delicate way possible. Bone dry. Pure distilled wine swag.

The man.

Fabrice calls magnums, "Petite Magnums". And he's always headed down to the cellar for just one more--but not before lighting up.

The barrel room. The whole thing. That's it.

The cellar. (Fabrice isn't keen on dusting)

Happy Holidays from Ancona's Wines & Liquors

Happy Holidays!Just a quick note to wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season!

CHEERS!

-Mitch
(feel free to stop reading here if you're short on time... just wanted to wish you all well)

Continue?
(for those of you with a little time... this is what we've been up to lately)

Still Brewing...
Julia and I helped our friend Matt brew a batch of beer a few weeks back. Now we have two five gallons kegs of home-brew. Which lead us to investing in a kegerator. And somehow we decided my office was the best place for the kegerator to live. All I need is a futon and it will be like my college dorm room.

'Tis The Season For School Concerts
Bravo to both my girls.

Events, Events and More Events!
We had a great event this past Wednesday at Ancona's Annex. Our friend Judd from Bruichladdich lead us through a tasting that explored the role "peat" plays in single malt scotches.

We have bunch of "open house" tastings going on over the next few days
in both stores. See the schedule below:

 Saturday, December 19th
Michael Skurnik Wines @ Ancona's Wines Ridgefield 3pm-6pm
Hartley & Parker @ Ancona's Wines Wilton 12pm-3pm

Tue, December 22nd
We welcome Marco from Agricola San Felice.  He'll be offering his magnificent portfolio of Italian wines @ Ancona's Wines Ridgefield 2:00pm-5:00pm

Wednesday, December 23rd
Fountainhead Wines @ Ancona's Wines Ridgefield 3pm-6pm
Ferrari Trento @ Ancona's Wines Wilton 3pm-6pm

Thu, December 24th
Martin Scott Wines @ Ancona's Wines Ridgefield 1pm-4pm
Missing Link Wines @ Ancona's Wines Wilton 12pm-3pm

We Have You Covered
Both stores are fully stocked with fun and fantastic gift giving ideas.

Bourbon- Our selection has never been so vast. Even some of the "ultra" rare selections have trickled in over the past few weeks and are all out on our shelves now, but they won't last long!

Beer- We have a great selection of hard to find craft brews along with
yummy limited holiday releases.

Wine- We always have great wines to taste everyday (12-8pm) in both stores.
Yesterday, Codey added two gems to the tasting machines in Ridgefield.

Amaro- "If you're like me your eating habits change this time of year.  Great holiday fare is difficult to say no to. Everyone needs a bottle of amaro in there fridge. Just a sip after a big meal will help everything "settle" so that you can get a good night's rest." - Dr. Mitch

Bubbles- Champagnes, Cremants, American sparklers, Cava, Prosecco -- we have them all!

(Ok...  here is where the post goes even longer)

HOLIDAY STAFF PARTY '15

Every Party Should Start with A Sharp Implement

Other Warmer Uppers.....

Fun Being Serious
This year we added a side by side tasting component to the evenings festivities. The purpose was to compare and contrast two similar but different wines...

Champagne: one made from white grapes, the other red.

Chablis: two iconic producer's interpretation of the same vintage.

Cali Pinot Noir: two producer's Pinot Noir from the same vintage and the same
vineyard site.

School Bottles
Kinda like liquid text books...

Serious Fun
As serious as we are about wine, spirits and beer we also like to have fun...
a lot of fun.
Codey, never one to waste a drop of great Riesling.
Eddie and his new best friend.
Bad Pikachu aka someone's not getting a bonus this year.
Yeah.. we play games...

Never Fear... We Had Beer... and Tequila

Show Off
Jackie showed off her micro sabering skills on this split of Champagne using a vintage cork screw... Impressive!

Reflections
This one happens to be my x-mas tree reflecting on my refrigerator at night.

Until next time.... be safe and drink well!

Bargain red Burgundy from one of the finest sites in all of Epineuil

Good Morning Burg Lovers! Codey here...

I'm always hunting for good Red Burgundy in everyday price ranges. It's not hard to find cheap and cheerful quaffing Burg in the $20 range. Just about every Burgundy merchant makes one. And they are what they should be: light, simple, fresh, serviceable Red Burgundy. It's hardly ever though that we find deliciously rich, well-built, soulful Burgundy in the same price range. That's where Dampt comes in clutch:

2012 Vignoble Dampt Bourgogne Epineuil "Les Beaumonts"

This gem comes to us from a single vineyard terroir "Les Beaumonts", one of the finest sites in all of Epineuil.

Vignoble Dampt is a 3-brother operation. Eric, Emmanuel and Hervé tend a choice collection of vines, including Grand Cru and Premier Cru Vineyards in the heart of Chablis. Dampt is first and foremost a fine Chablis producer, however, over the years this trio has collected fine vineyard sites in just about every nook and cranny of Northern Burgundy.

This particular territory, Epineuil, is nestled in the Yonne Department, where it benefits from sacred soils: limestone-rich Kimmeridgian marl.

Kimmeridgian=Tiny fossilized oyster shells.

This neighborhood generally offers exceptional values for fine Pinot Noir, however, in solar vintages like 2012, this appellation truly sings. And "Les Beaumont" is just killin' it right now.

Quintessential Red Burgundy+Killer price=Autumnal Bliss. (Simple math)

If you want some, please e-mail me and let me know how many bottles/cases, and which store you would prefer to pick them up in. Orders will be filled next week. Shipping available.

All best.

Codey Foster, Wine Director

Regular Price: $25.99
Email Price: $20/bottle
6 bottles or more: $18/bottle
Please Note: This wine is small production and limited.Orders due by Sunday Night.

Codey Notes: Layered, robust, and woodsy. Aromas of crunchy red fruits, ripe red cherry, cranberry bog, leather, earth, antique books. On the palate, creamy red cherry. A certain sumptuousness usually reserved for Burgundy twice the price. No new oak, just natural yeast. Elegance meets richness. A lengthy finish resonating with cherry cola, black truffle, and palm leaf. Curious. And delicious. Extremely satisfying. Drink it now, but don't be afraid to hold a few bottles for 5-8 years. It's got the stuffing.

Also, since you read this far: a tiny quantity of magnums are available. $51/bottle. Limit One Per Person Please. :)

The Best Wines for Thanksgiving

The count down is on -- Thanksgiving is only a few days away! Ancona's has everything you need to make it memorable. I've included a few tips and staff picks in this e-mail to help you choose the best wines for your big meal. We'll be sampling an assortment of turkey-friendly wine and beer at Ancona's 3 Day Thanksgiving Tasting Extravaganza. You do not want to miss this sensational opportunity to taste our collection of festive libations.

Ancona's 3 Day Tasting Extravaganza

Saturday, November 21 - 3-6pm
Ridgefield & Wilton - Wine

Tuesday, November 24 - 3-6pm
Ridgefield - Wine   /   Wilton - Beer & Wine

Wednesday, November 25 - 3-6pm
Ridgefield - Beer & Wine  /   Wilton - Wine

When matching wine with your Thanksgiving meal look for something that pairs well with a wide range of flavors. Sparkling wines are wonderful on their own or paired with hors d'oeuvres.

When looking for a white to pair with your Thanksgiving feast, balance is key. Try to avoid whites that are too light or too oaky. Gravitate toward wines that are refreshing, tangy, and fruity. If your palate favors a hint of sweetness, try a bottle of Chenin Blanc or Riesling.

If red wines are more your style, try Pinot Noir or Gamay. Their balanced acidity and generous fruit make these varietals especially food-friendly. If you prefer heartier reds, try Zinfandel or a Syrah/Grenache blend. These bold varietals have the complexity to stand up to savory Thanksgiving dishes and will not overpower the rest of the meal.
Domaine de la Prebende Beaujolais
Patton Valley Pinot Noir
Buried Cane Cabernet Sauvignon
Rickshaw Pinot Noir
Terres d'Avignon 'Cypress Cuvee' Cotes du Rhone
Wild Thing Zinfandel
