The
perfect Mint Julep requires fresh mint and quality Bourbon. If you have
the privilege of using mint from a local garden, select tender leaves
from the top of the plant. Always remember to rinse and dry mint
thoroughly and remove stems before using. Quality Bourbon is essential
to a successful Mint Julep, however, you should avoid using very
expensive, aged whiskey. About an hour before making Mint Juleps toss
the glasses in the freezer. This little trick is a great way to avoid
watering down a beverage, the frosted glass prevents ice from melting.
Now on to the recipe! Muddle 4 mint leaves, 1 tsp of confectioners' sugar and a splash of Bourbon (I recommend using Willett Bourbon Pot Still Reserve) at the bottom of a glass. Once the mint leaves and sugar have formed a thick paste add 1 cup of crushed ice. Pour 4 oz Bourbon over ice. Add more crushed ice and a mint sprig for garnish. Now your Mint Julep is ready to enjoy. Sit back, relax and cheer on your favorite contender in this year's race. Cheers!
