We've been busy little bees lately tasting tons of wines and
picking the best to share with you. Our front pick sections are being
re-vamped this very moment. Fall favorites are moving in as Summer
sippers are transitioning out, here are a few highlights:
I've fallen in love with wines from Chinon. Chinon is located in the Loire Valley, France and is made from the Cabernet Franc
grape varietal. They tend to be lighter in body than Cabernet Sauvignon
with black fruit and spice being common flavor characteristics. I
enjoyed the Domaine Olga Raffault 2007
(the one in the picture on the left) with a strip steak w/sautéed
mushrooms the other night and was in heaven. If you desire a little
fresher fruit characteristic try the 2011 from Olga it will surely win you over.
We are introducing a section in both stores simply named "Bookends".
These will be pairs of wines that are similar but are somehow very
different. For example, we may select a producer and feature a white and
a red or choose a specific grape varietal and feature two separate
regions. The wines pictures to the right are a white and a red from the
same producer, Adelaida Cellars in Paso Robles. Both are interesting blends, with the red being Mouvedre and Grenache and the white Viognier and Rousanne.
Cheers to the beers of the season! September marks the beginning of one
of my favorite "beer seasons", Fall. This year we decided to create
Ancona's very first pumpkin themed mixed six pack. Sample 6 different pumpkin flavored beers in one convenient ready-to-go package. September also brings about many awesome Oktoberfest beers. Celebrate
the shift in season and watch the leaves change from green to orange
with a group of friends and few delicious brews. Right now I'm hooked on
one of my usual favorites, Erdinger Oktoberfest-Weizen.
I love that it's a "mash-up" of two styles, traditional malty
Oktoberfest and lean, crisp weizen. A must try if you like either style.
One of the most exciting additions to the mix as of the past few months
are our pallet wines. We meet with wholesalers tasting through hundreds
of selections to find the perfect hidden gems. We arrange to buy all of
the remaining inventory from the wholesaler at a reduced rate and then
pass the savings on to you. You can save up to 20% on all our pallet wine selections but they rarely stay in inventory for more than a few weeks time. Last week we added two more to the mix, a fantastic traditional Chianti Classico Riserva and a beautiful Godello from Spain.
Now for something a little different. We just added a few very intriguing wines from the area of Jura
in France. Jura is located between Burgundy and the Swiss border. The
wines share similarities to wines from both of those areas but with a
major twist. Some
of the wines are produced in the vin jaune style which is similar to
the production method of Sherry (but these are not fortified wines).
I would go deeper into what that exactly means but I'm running out of
space. Stop by either store and chat with Monica and Codey to learn
more. I'll just say that they'll expand your concept of what a great
wine can taste like.
