Wine Review: 2011 Cantina Tollo Colle Secoo Pecorino & 2009 Cantina Tollo Colle Secco Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva

This week our spotlight focuses on Cantina Tollo, found in 1960 by a small group of people with a strong desire to deliver a rustic, old-world experience through the use of modern practices. Each bottle tells a story and every sip reveals Cantina Tollo's unwavering dedication to produce outstanding, budget-friendly traditional wine. The 2012 Cantina Tollo Colle Secco Pecorino is made from the Pecorino grape, a lesser known varietal native to central Italy. It is an inviting, fresh white that lands at the top of my list for summertime enjoyment. The 2009 Cantina Tollo Colle Secco Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva hosts inviting red and black fruit flavors matched by graceful acidity. It is an excellent mate for grilled meat or pasta.

2012 Cantina Tollo Colle Secco Pecorino: This refreshing white is made from the Pecorino grape (not from the cheese). What's the connection? Pecora means "sheep" in Italian. The cheese is made from the milk of the sheep and the grapes are what the sheep liked to eat while driving through the pasture. The color of the wine is a light straw-yellow and the aromas have tropical and citrus nuances with a hint of peach and sage. It is medium bodied with good structure and an inviting lingering finish. Enjoy this wine with fish, and fresh mozzarella cheese.

2009 Cantina Tollo Colle Secco Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva: This is a delicious all-arounder made with the Montepulciano grape. The wine spends 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels. It has a nice ruby red/purplish color with a bouquet and flavors of red fruit and plums, and hints of licorice, cocoa, and spice. The tannins are balanced and the acidity carries the fruit to a lovely finish. A terrific wine to pair with grilled or roasted meats, pasta dishes, and cheeses. An enoyable slurp!
